Bare Hands

The phone rang constantly, making it unbearable for him to stand in the room with echoes of her chuckles and noise of his phone. He wanted to shut her off his life, her voice, her scent her touch her love her being her existence..all of it.

She could still make him skip his heartbeats every time she walked in from the front door. Her mere presence made him remember the days he had spent waiting for her outside the hospital doors. It was the time her visits at hospital were as common as flattering of leaves on a windy day. Her visits would last for long hours and often when she came out she was as exhausted as first time marathon runner. He never really understood the reason why she chose to visit the hospital when things could be done from home as well.
She always was very sporting and brave and could deal with pain far better than he ever was able to do…he often felt it was her head strong behaviour and her resilience to give in that kept her going…. For once he should have stopped her for once he could have yelled at her for not going maybe maybe things would have been different…

He wanted a small compact house, she wanted to plant a garden,
He wanted to create a gym on terrace, she wanted to lie on terrace the whole night counting stars,
He wanted to make a career she wanted to raise kids..
They were poles a part and yet the thought of being together was intoxicating, it was the craziness in her that was compelling and he often felt drawn to it.
It was the day they were going to busy from dawn to dusk, they had waited and hoped for this day for years. While making sure the world was holding their marvels in their palms she had realised she wasn’t going to hold her own. She had accepted the fate and now finally things and changed, she had got a call a week earlier confirming the nomination and now in her spree of excitement she had transformed the house, the garden and all set to transform the lives in due time.
All set for a wonderful evening she finally decided to have a cup of tea before doing a last check on all the must haves and good to haves.

Still lost in thoughts she got her cup of tea and moved to the garden to breathe some fresh air. She was just about to sit on the garden chairs when she heard her phone ring…

“I’ll get that” he shouted
He knew it would be someone asking for her time and he didn’t want anyone taking time from her today.
She deserved to live every moment of today’s string of events that were to take place. He had seen her long and crave for that one piece of happiness and finally she was gonna get it..and he didn’t want anyone to take it away from her at any cost.
“It was nothing, may be a wrong number, don’t worry” he yelled back.
The phone rang again and he disconnected it, she knew he was keeping her from attaining a call.
She finished her tea and walked him, picked her phone and dialed back the number… There was summon waiting for her to run and reach…

“I will be back in time I promise” she said.
“Don’t be stupid girl, you don’t have to be Joan of arc every time …don’t go ..I don’t want you to be tired in the evening, we might have a long night ahead” he argued annoyed at her getting ready to walk out.

The evening came and went, the dates got rescheduled, she didn’t come. It wasn’t unusual for her to forgo her happiness and then justify her existence. He waited patiently, not mad at her but sad and upset as rescheduled dates were for a year later and all the good to haves and must haves now would have

to wait a lifetime and he would have to be by her side hiding his pain to be her wall to lean on.
She never came that evening…it was next morning that he received a call from the hospital asking him to come over. In the evening he returned alone and life ceased to exist as he knew it.

It was exactly a year today. The phone rang insanely, he knew it was them, the rescheduled dates had come.
